I am in my early 30's just beginning a career in architecture. With unbeleavable school debt and a horrible economic outlook for the profession, the lifelong dream of moving to Alaska and building a remote cabin completely apart from developed areas has taken hold again. I realize I'm not the first office ****** who's had this thought, but I'm now in a position where it makes sense for me to at least push that way. I'm sure I'll get the generic "you don't know what you're getting into" arguments, but hopefully someone with some applicable knowledge will have some advice on which regions/areas/specific locations THEY would choose if embarking on a similar journey. What issues would you consider?

Appreciate the advice...

I'll belay the usual (and true) arguments that you don't know what you are getting into but if you are serious and determined I'd only consider SE Alaska in areas in near proximity to fishing. Winter is less harsh in SE, it's much harder to starve to death if you know what you are doing and there is plenty of fresh water and timber available. You pretty much will be living an Alaska Native subsistence style of life and you will need to be willing and able to eat anything edible and nutritious such as sea weed and the like. Transportation is the big issue there as everything is done by water or air. The Kenai peninsula and other areas along the southern coast are also possibilities but the idea of raising vegetables and keeping chickens and such on tidy little acreage in a self sufficient fashion has very little basis in reality without a great deal of front end investment and ready skills.

Good luck.

Why don't you get a job, of any kind, and pay your school debt back? Sounds like your trying to skip out on it and hide in the woods.

Yeah, I'll agree with that. It really does sound as if you are trying to avoid your responsibilities.

Why do you think it makes sense for you to do that?

I know that. I was asking OP why he/she feels it makes sense to go live off the land in Alaska.
