There isn't or hasn't ever been "high speed" internet here. You don't want to stream too much, they'll get you on the overages.

Everts, Lynden, and Northern Air Cargo fly out here. If you have a YKHC ID, you get a discount on Lynden Air Cargo.

They're finishing up on a new housing unit, but they do have various sized rentals across town.

On Alaska Air, if you plan ahead a month or so, you can get away with a $93 one way ticket up to $208 on first class seats.

You clearly aren’t a millennial.l! Well not gonna get too into it but my son has a stressful job, and he enjoys certain shows to unwind. “Try to make it here”? He’s made it. But this is an adventure, opportunity and a way to expand his perspective in his service to a community with real medical challenges in the field in which he excels. No, “activities”? Really? Lol. We aren’t going to get immense joy from ice skating. We DO get joy in being in a profession that matters. I’m a guidance counselor and in the last many years an addiction specialist, daughter-social worker and other son is a psychologist in the severe developmental disability fields. This is where we meet people with whom we share values, knowledge and working with people daily is how we develop interpersonal bonds leading to friendships. Maybe ice skating or some “activities “ might happen in the course of this meaningful kind of life....more likely Bowling! And There ya go.....
I think our definition of “making it” somewhere is very different, my friend :-)

Getting personal satisfaction from work and enjoying "ice skating" aren't mutually exclusive, btw. I do hope your son gets the chance to get outside now and then.

Man, I don’t think you know what y’all getting into. If he truly wants to develop relationships with the people he will work with, it ain’t unwinding watching a few shows. If he’s a millinneal, he will complain about the $300 month 40 gig plan that has to buffer every 2 minutes if it’s clear outside.

I think the only professional jobs in the bush that has a higher turnover than education are the hospital jobs.
$5 says he doesn’t complete half his contract if he’s got the attitude you have.

You did misunderstand what I wrote. I didn't say "making it" as in professionally. I said trying to make the place his is moving to (Bethel) be like the place he is moving from. It isn't going to work and he would be far better off going in with an open mind and accepting the place for what it is.

And my 2c on Amazon Prime: I've been contemplating it for a couple of years and I think I'm going to cancel my membership because I pay a bunch for shipping that takes forever to get here anyways. I think you miss the point. There is SO MUCH to do, to find out and to understand. 1 person can’t do that alone and “fully understand what he’s getting into”. It’s disturbing that I’m from NY and have an attitude yet I’m trying to gather every bit of info to share with him “what he is getting into”. The fact that you are focusing on 1 question when I asked at least 10 is highly concerning. It tells me that something about the internet triggers you when here you are. On the Internet! I’ve been a therapist, special education guidance counselor and addiction specialist and I’m seeing a great deal of personal baggage here. I am shocked at how judgemental and tunneled the vision of a couple people. Do you not see the irony & contradictions of your statements? It’s curious to me how you focus on the Internet. I’m sorry you hate it there so much. You must never have been homeless. We have. We have dealt with death, cancer, epilepsy, single parenthood and have risen to accomplish a great deal. MY suggestion to anyone seeing an awareness of “what you are getting into” would be to give him a call. Not only is he able to give you the bottom line on what you are “getting into”, he truly loves living there in spite of the challenges. He, and most of the folks on here have been so much more helpful than the recruiter. There is SO MUCH TO KNOW since going there first isn’t an option for people. So I thank everyone for the information on shipping cars- btw is not $4500, lol. Around the 1000-1500 mark give or take weight of vehicle . He got a quote today. The websites provided on shopping ...great. Thank you! And it’s clear that one has to go there not for the “activities” lol. But for the reasons you signed on in the first place-to provide much medical support to the community and grow personally & professionally.
