Wow, the hospital in which I work trains every single employee, even secretaries and janitors, cooks, everyone--- to pass NCI and CPR certification each 6 months. This is along with first aid, each year more and more contingencies are added to the curriculum, burns, electrocution, chemical exposures, radiation, head trauma, childbirth as well as indepth first responder training. They set up mock scenarios at various locations around the hospital to surprize someoone with an emergency situation. Even the Doctors and RN's are required to take the same courses. Our CPR cert. is done on computerized dummies that will "die" if the procedure is done incorrectly, it is a great incentive. Ours is a state facility and they want everyone to know how to handle emergencies. EMT's, ain't paid enough for the great job they do.

gross stories
Yeah, you want some seriously gross stories, get a couple beers into some long-time paramedics/EMT's and toss them an innocent question or two. If they have any experience at all, you'll soon hear a collection of "names changed to protect the guilty" stories that will all but curl your hair and will certainly raise your gorge (might not want to try this over lunch).
Some of the guys that have been running ambulance calls for years in the larger cities have seen things that would shake anyones faith in the whole concept of "human intelligence".

By the way, if anyone on POW is interested, there are some more certified Red Cross instructors (CPR/1st Aid) on the island now. We have new materials from a DOT grant. We can certify from 1 person to 10/11 people per instructor. So if someone needs it to be on a fishing boat/etc on POW, I can advise ya who to contact (and/or teach you since I'm an instructor now).
