The last and only time I bought a roasting chicken in Alaska, I left in on the porch railing while unloading the truck after a shopping trip to Wasilla. I couldn't carry everything in all at once. And then the phone or something rang, so it was ten minutes or so before I went back out for the chicken. By then it was gone.

I'm not from Alaska, but I know from researching the cost of things for friends who were moving to Alaska that the cost of things depends on where in Alaska you live. From googling the cost of living in Bethel, AK, for example, here's what I found (from May 2008 and the price of gas rose considerably during the summer and may or may not have gone back down again - that would affect the cost of all of these things):

Current grocery around Alaska - ADN had an article of current grocery prices around Alaska. Check where Bethel ranks

Locals Guide - Prices as of 05/28/08
Current Prices for Various Utilities / Gas / Groceries:
These are some current prices in Bethel Alaska
Stove Oil:
from $4.53 to $6.39 per gallon
*after 1st barge comes in
Automobile Gasoline:
$5.60 per gallon
Telephone Service (Basic): $24.95/mo
Rent 1 Bedroom House with Utilities: $600-$1300
Basic Cable Service:
$12.50/mo
Average Ticket from Anchorage to Bethel Round Trip:
$481.00
Advanced Cable Service:
$91.21/mo
Basic Cellular Service:
$1.00/min (not sure monthly)
2006 Yamaha Venture XL Sno-Go
$5995

FOOD ITEMS (ON SALE IN LOCAL PAPER)
12 Pack Soda
$7.29
#10 of Potatoes:
$8.99 (Swanson's Sale)
Bananas:
$1.25/lb
Bath Tissue:

$9.99/lb
Pork Steaks:

My friend who moved recently to the Anchorage area pay a little less for all of the above things(I asked them).

When I was up in the Mat-Su Valley a couple weeks ago unleaded regular was $4.35/gallon. It was $4.65/gallon in Soldotna. Diesel was anywhere from $4.99/gallon (Mat-Su) - $5.20/gallon (Soldotna)

Was in Anchorage for a week and got home lastnight. Gas came down 8 cents a gallon and is averaging $4.19 a gallon. It's still $6 here in Bethel or so. I finally went biking lastnight! I should go out again today, no wind and about 60 above.

We were down to 4.44 gal unleaded the other day - chicken - depends on whole, pieces, or whether on sale, can get pieces anywhere from .99 to 1.79 or more depending on what. Got boneless, skinless breasts in family pack last week for 2.29 pound...
