What are the safest small towns in Alaska? By small I mean less than 5000 people. Even less than 1000 is of interest to us. We would like to find a small town with a good bookstore and a Library, not too far to a food store and a friendly, helpful community of people. Any suggestion? Thanks

You would have to get an answer from a local. I haven't lived in Alaska in a long time. I don't think crime would be a big concern in most of the small towns. You really should narrow your search down somewhat. The Southeast coast/islands? Interior? If you like the interior, you can do a google on McGrath Alaska. They have a fairly active community forum. McGrath is isolated and can only be reached by air. There are daily flights to Anchorage. It's probably close to 200 miles northwest of Anchorage. Seems like nice people on the forum. It would give you a sense of small town Alaska in any event.

Not real sure if any one place is safer than another. You can check the Alaska State Trooper reports here:
www.dps.state.ak.us/pio/dispatch/ on a daily basis. Pretty much things happen in all towns or villages. But as big as the state is, there is really not that much in the trooper reports. I'm sure the city cops have more to add.

Haines has a beautiful Library, and a great small town atmosphere Populaiton is around 2200. There is a list of the crime averages in Haines on the community website.

I'd suggest somewhere in the Kenai or Southeast. Better in Kenai, because the road system connects with the rest of the world, and you might have a shot at a bookstore AND a library within 50 miles. The Interior is pretty much out of the question. The only town with a library and a bookstore is Fairbanks (I'm fairly sure). I've been wrong many times before, and actually I LIKE being corrected, as it's the only way I learn anything new.

If you consider Talkeetna to be in the interior it has both a bookstore and a library; Trapper Creek and Cantwell both have libraries. Technically these are in SouthCentral but lately I've heard people refer to everything north of Wasilla as the interior.
