Palmer is pretty being surrounded by the mountains, but so is Wasilla. I personally find Palmer to be a very tight-knit community and certainly not very friendly. Palmeranians as they are referred to do their shopping in Wasillian land because they object to big box stores, which is fine. But you will find at least in Wasilla you have a pretty good pick and choose of stores and restaurants.
