I've been to Alaska once before, 10 years ago.... I have family there and of course will be visiting them. We would be flying into Fairbanks and out of Anchorage. We might have as much as 2 weeks to spend there. We will be going in late May (is it too cold to boondock an RV at that time?), or possibly early June.

Which route or routes should we take? and why?

I need to know if there is a place to rent RV's anywhere, or would we have to rent a car and stay at hotels?

What sights could we see along the way and what are the big 'must see' places from around that area? and why?

Our wish list is simply to enjoy the beauty of it all. I want to show DH a glacier and walk out on one (I thought that was just AWESOME 10 years ago) but I am not sure where I went....

Thanks in advance
Amanda

Can't recommend ABC Rentals.

Their operation in Anchorage was very disorganized. We rented a class C RV, picked it up, then took it back as it was old and not up to standard. To their credit, they did get us a better unit.

Try Holiday RV rentals. Stopped by their location once, and they looked sharp and organized.

You have to drive though Denali to get to Anchorage from Fairbanks. Amazing scenery. So just wing it.

Kenai Fjords, Denali, Talkeetna for the fly over of the mountain, Homer.....and there really isn't a lot of choice on highways. Pretty much, anywhere you drive will be scenic. Watch out for the Moose!

I have done quite a bit of research and seem to be narrowing it down to flying into anchorage, taking the highly reccomended (from this forum) train to fairbanks.... then renting an RV from 'go north' website (they have truck campers too for much cheaper so we might do that)..... So from there we would head east, toward TOK. we would stop at north pole (family) and at Dot Lake (family)... from TOK we would drive south through glennallen and then back west to anchorage.

My next question for the forum is to compare valdez and seward.... I have heard different views on both, looked at both (in pictures) and wonder which we should extend our drive toward. It appears to be 4 hours to get to seward from anchorage and 3 hours from glennallen to get to valdez. Are there any major differences between the two? I know valdez is big on fishing.... I went fishing there the last time I visited but it was so long ago, I forget so much.

Thanks for the input so far, this forum is the best state forum I've been on (and I have been involved in a few of them in the past year in attempts to find out things about their states, visiting etc.)
Thanks everyone! Stay warm!

Amanda

Why can't you just go to both Seward and Valdez? I would.

Just go do whatever the road brings! Don't make plans, just hop in the RV and cruise!
