So my husband and I are considering moving to Alaska with our two children (3 and 1) and I am looking for some advice from people who actually live in Alaska.

I think that I would be most interested in somewhere further south ( I dont mind cold weather but I am not interested in it being below 0 all winter long. I would also like to live somewhere that is not too far away from some chain stores like Target or something similar. My Husband has worked mainly in Public works and I am a teacher.

There are Targets in Anchorage and Wasilla - I think that's it.

Wal Marts are in Anchorage, Wasilla, Juneau, Fairbanks (I think!), Ketchikan, Kodiak

Costco is in Anchorage and Juneau

Not being interested in being below 0 "all winter long" would probably rule out Fairbanks and Bethel, or any other of the west/northwest Alaska and the interior.

Personally, I would recommend Ketchikan to anyone who'd listen... but I understand it's not for everyone (some people don't like rain!). I don't like Anchorage so much any more - very much a big city. All you do there is drive.

Thanks I will look into Ketchikan! I dont mind the rain I live in Oregon right now. I just dont want to freeze my toes off! I also am not a big fan of Crazy weather or being completely secluded. I too cant handle big cities! I dont like traffic But I generally need to be somewhere near some larger stores I have never been really big on ordering things online but I guess I could learn.

It gets cold below zero in Anchorage, too

If your only choice is Anchorage why would you bother moving to Alaska? Seems like a waste to me.

Anchorage is somewhat like Salem but probably smaller-I'm not a good judge of things like that. If you chose Ketchikan, you'd have to fly or take a ferry to go anywhere. We have two major malls like Salem one downtown and one on Dimond, very busy like Lancaster, and several smaller malls. Two Targets, Walmart Supercenter, etc. It's not a zoo but it is a lot crazier, traffic-wise than any other Alaskan city.

Ketchikan's all right but be advised that the rain in Oregon is no preparation for the rain there.

Check out Kenai/Soldotna. There's no Target but there is a Fred Meyer and several other larger stores if that's what you are into. I lived in Seward and loved it. Keep in mind that in Alaska you get used to driving long distances for things unless you live in Anchorage or one of the several communities you cannot drive out of.
