Hey everyone, I'm getting really excited about my trip this coming week! My friend and I will be in Anchorage Thursday night! We're planning on hanging around in town Friday and Saturday morning for the Iditarod, then taking off for a night each in Girdwood, Homer, and a cabin near Sterling, then heading back up to Hatcher Pass for a couple nights, then up to Denali State Park and Talkeetna.

We're going to be tent camping a few nights, around Girdwood and Hatcher Pass, and staying indoors the rest of the time (two nights in cabins, which I guess counts as camping for some). We've also got a chauffeur of sorts - a guy I met when I was up last summer wanted to come hang out with us and offered to drive us around in his giant Dodge Ram because he was worried about a couple of southern girls driving around in a rental in winter. I'm glad we decided to take him up on the offer, since you've been getting all that slush and rain and junk that can mess up the roads pretty bad. Also, he's bringing along his snowboards and snowmachine, and we're bringing snowshoes, so it should be a lot of fun!

If anyone has suggestions about things to do or good places to eat, etc. along our route, I'd love to hear them! So far we've decided we should go to Snow City Cafe in Anc, Glacier City Brewhouse (though it looks like it might be a little stuffy for my tastes) or maybe Humpy's instead, The Bake Shop in Girdwood, and Two Sisters Bakery in Homer, which is a couple blocks from where we're staying (can you tell we like bakeries?). My friend's also bringing along some red salmon and king crab he caught this summer, so we'll probably cook that up while we're out camping.

Anyways, this is getting to be a long post and I've got to get back to work, but I appreciate any suggestions and can't wait to get back up to AK!

In that case, definitely stop at the Moose is Loose Bakery in Soldotna on your way to/from Homer.

Moose Is Loose Bakery Soldotna Alaska, Alaska's Best Bakery

Also, you can call ahead to get your name on the waiting list at Snow City Cafe. The place is always packed, but even more so now with Rondy going on.

Thanks a bunch, guys! I'll look into some of those. I'm just about packed, and happy to see the weather's probably going to be better than it was there for a while!

Avoid Snow City Cafe.... trust me... unless you are dying to be part of the it crowd, its not worth the wait. I work across the street and have their food ocassionaly because it is convenient. Its over priced IMO.

Between Sterling and Homer is a little town called Kasilof. The Kasilof Mercantile is on your left hand side when headed south. Its a log cabin structure with a Giant Swing across the parking lot. Attached is a cafe called Rocky's Cafe. Seriously it is some of the best food I have had ever in Alaska. Their menu has many Alaskan items (Reindeer Sausage, Salmon, Halibut, Caribou) on it. Items do change, but I have never ever had a bad meal there. I make time my meals around this place when headed to Ninilchik in the summer, which I do about 12 times a year.

If you like a slushy mess with black-iced roads at night. I would prefer it just get really cold and stay that way.

Hey, at least the forecast for next week is below freezing most of the time and just says snow! Better than 40+ and raining!

I can see that. I do like the idea of king crab cakes in an eggs benedict, though. We're getting away pretty cheap on this trip anyways: used our miles for the flight, don't have to rent a car, and we're camping out some nights, so I don't mind paying a little more for food. But if you've got a place you like better for breakfast in Anc, let me know!

I will definitely keep that in mind. I'm always up for trying new animals, and I've never had caribou before.

I'm pretty sure we're not going to get that far north, but I went through that area last summer and will definitely check it out more next time.
