Hello everyone,

I'm thinking about relocating to Alaska in a few years. I'm just trying to get all of my "ducks in a row". What do you think about the areas of Juneau, Fairbanks, and Ketchikan? What jobs/degrees are sought after? What is the average cost of living? What are the pros and cons of Alaska?

Thanks everyone!

Take a few days and read through these forums. You'll get a pretty good picture. Be aware that the cost of living is higher in Alaska.

agree with the 2 above... go to the Alaska DCRA and look up something called Alaska Economic Trends. They have a helpful COL comparison there. Ketchikan and Juneau are both going to be more expensive than Anchorage. Don't know about Fairbanks as I've never wanted to live there.

I've been to Ketchikan several times - my parents live there, I'd love to live there... but don't. Lots of rain. If you don't like rain/clouds/lots of trees Juneau and Ketchikan are out for you. Fairbanks gets really (like -50F) cold during the winter. Too cold for my personal taste.

Good luck in your choice. I'm partial to southeast AK myself.

mm, Fairbanks is a whole world away from Juneau and Ketch.... have you seen where it is on a map? Just asking because it's a lot like saying "I'm considering moving to North Carolina, South Carolina, and Massachusetts".

Aquariusmom is spot on. Fairbanks is a whole other world. It's one that I love and wouldn't consider living anywhere else though except perhaps the 40 mile area lol. But, once you become a nurse, there are plenty of jobs here for you. Heck, even CNAs are in demand up here.

I'd say choose the Fairbanks area, but then again I'm biased. lol Alaska is such a vast State. If I were you, I'd choose what things I like to do, the type of climate that agrees with me, and things I could live without. Once you do that, it'll make it alot easier for you to narrow down where you'd like to live.

Just my two cents, because I'm not actually there yet.
