HI. My husband and 6 years old are thinking of moving to Amsterdam new York and wondering what is a good area? I'm in calif. And am not familiar with the city. Thanks
Perhaps Scotia, nicer parts of Amsterdam, the Union Street area of Schenectady and parts of Rotterdam.
Scotia's nice. One of my longest friends lives in Scotia, in fact he moved there from Amsterdam when he got married 9 years ago.
There's "nice" parts of Amsterdam??? I spent a lot of time there back in the 1990's and up until 2004 when my ex and I broke up, and it was always more than a bit of a dump no matter where you went. Now that my friend closed up his music shop on East Main St and moved out of the city I don't go there at all anymore.
I had to mapquest to figure out how long it would take you to get from Sch'dy to Amsterdam, I thought it would take longer. I was pleasantly surprised it was under 1/2 hr, which I think is a fair commute.
It's roughly 18-20 miles between the two cities. When I used to go there from Sch'dy, I would jump on I-890 and take that as far as it went, and either go over 5S to the Lock 9 bridge and cross the river to Route 5, or else pick up Route 5 right from I-890.
Never bothered with the Thruway.
I practically lived on East Main, High St, Park St, Vrooman and Bunn Streets from 1993 to 2004. I had a friend who owned the Spanish music store on East Main and lived on High St, and my ex had apartments on Park, Vrooman and Bunn Sts between 1997 and 2004.

Really. Come up to the Mont Pleasant neighborhood and you won't be saying that. McCarthy needs to start providing for the people who are already living in the city rather than just Metroplex and that damned casino. You did hear about that last shooting on Crane St, yes? Just a stone's throw from where they plan on building the new MP library. I used to walk and ride my bike to the present library (right next door to the new location) when I was growing up there back in the 1980's. You wouldn't catch me on foot anywhere in that neighborhood unless I am arriving at and or leaving my parents' house on Oakwood.

There appears to be some solid to fine outer city neighborhoods in Amsterdam to the W/NW and N portions of the city that are in the middle class range. Census Tract 070500 in Montgomery County, New York
Now that we covered them, I think Rotterdam is pretty decent and maybe underappreciated sometimes. Scotia is where I would shoot for, if I were you. Avoid Gloversville at all costs.
Amsterdam is a rundown city that is not necessarily awful in regards to violent crime, but it's pretty bad for drug use. If you had a smaller budget, I could say Amsterdam would be ok for a temporary spot to settle into while you looked into other areas. It's just not a nice place. It's very "depressed".
I heard that downtown Schenectady isn't a nice area and not too safe? Anyone live there or have more insight into this claim to either confirm or deny this?
I work just off of State St in Schenectady near Proctors. This area, I would consider safe. You just have to be careful once you leave the "downtown" area and toward Albany. I don't feel those areas are safe.
As for the cost, with the casino opening up, I am not sure you will find a reasonably priced apartment downtown. But I am just assuming, so you would have to ask around.
We live outside of Scotia. It is a nice town, but if you are looking for walkable night life there isn't much to do. From Scotia would only be a 5-10 minute drive into Schenectady.

What about Upper Union and the general Union Street area? I believe that some of the other outer neighborhoods are solid as well.
I will say I drove through Amsterdam, one side to the other, and it reminded me of Jamestown and Olean. THAT IS NOT A GOOD THING. It seemed really run down, defeated, and poor. I know I only drove through, but yikes.
I will say driving in from the north before the city limits there were nice houses and nice, new plazas.

That is also near where middle class parts of the city are located as well.
