So many questions!!!! Husband (Saratoga born & raised) just got a job offer in Rensselaer, and we have 2 kids, ages 4 and 15. He'd like to keep his commute to 30 minutes or less -- is that doable?

We're in a Philly suburb now and can't wait to get to NY -- but he hasn't lived there since 1979, when he joined the Air Force, so he doesn't know much about the area anymore.

Anybody know the better school districts? We don't want to be in the cities, but not in the sticks, either -- kind of a suburban area.... where we can get a 3BR house for not more than $250K. Good family areas?

I sure appreciate your help, and can't wait to join you up there!

Kris

Default Yes, its doable

You could try Clifton Park. It is a spread out community with no centralized downtown but has parks and special sidewalks along many of the roads. Shenendehoa Schools are said to be one of the best in the state. With traffic, it would be every bit of 30 min but probably not much more. You probably wont think traffic is staggering compared to Phily. Your 3 bedroom will probably eat up most of the 250K. It will be a decent home but not alot of frills.
East Greenbush is an improving school district and your 250K could buy a decent home there but prices are rising as we speak. No village feel but like clifton Park it is a community near the edge of Capital district and you would be closer to Rensselaer.
The area around Delmar is a very nice little community but your 250K will not go far there.
The only other place I can think of might be Guilderland. Your 250 would be maxed out there also but if you look you could find a good home. Schools are pretty good there as well.
All in all, Clifton Park and that area, Halfmoon, is where most families like to go. It has a real "Soccor Mom" feel to it. Not a put-down, please, just a perfect way of describing it.
Good luck with your move
