I drove from Troy to Albany for work for a few months. The worst part of the trip was driving down Hoosick in the morning, so if you can avoid that you'll feel better in general. 787 has some slow downs but there were rarely jams.
As for the violent crime, most of it is in Lansingburgh, north of Hoosick, but some of it has been creeping into downtown, mostly very late at night. I've never had any hesitation to be in Troy in the evenings, though.

Is it throughout the entirety of Lansingburgh or does it decrease the further north you go?

I don't live close enough to be able to discern that. There might be a good part of Lansingburgh. There is a good ice cream stand during the summer and I went to church there for a while without any problems. Looks like the most recent shooting suspect crashed his car into Corliss Apartments and ran into the woods before being apprehended.
