There are many homes for sale in Schenectady and for good reason. The economy is very weak in the city. Also, taxes are very high in Schenectady right now - a true contradiction, I know. However, there are still many wonderful communities close to the city. Colonie is not a bad area, and there are still many nice homes in the Scotia/Glenville area. Latham is another area to find bargains. However, one of the nicest areas to buy in your price range is Loudonville. Taxes are not as high, and the community is more sophisticated. There are still many homes available in your price range. If you don't mind higher taxes, Niskayuna is another fine community with many prestigious homes. The school districts in both Niskayuna and Loudonville are excellent. My own home is considered Loudonville, but I pay Albany taxes. I'll sell you my house when I move south to retire. Good luck. Hope this helps.
I personally just moved from Schenectady. There was not a single thing that I liked about living there. While there we has multiple shootings within a few mile radius. I grew up in NYC and I refused to even bring out the garbage at night by myself in Schenectady. I lived in the Stockade area which was supposed to be one of the nicer parts. I completely disagree. If you want to be in Schenectady I would recommend looking around upper Union. If you venture down some of the side streets there are actually quite a few nice little areas. I personally would recommend Scotia/Glenville though. Im not a huge fan of the area but its a heck of alot better than actually being in Schenectady. Move to Clifton Park. It is SOOO much better!
