I don't know how looking2mov gets to Albany- but the places PhoenixLady listed are 30-45 min. I know, I drive it. Valatie is 20 min+ of course depending on where in Albany you are going. Def check out Northern Columbia Co., southern Rensselaer County. Columbia might be a bit pricier-- a lot of the real estate has been bought by "city people" (NYC)--esp after 9/11. A lot of them have "weekend" homes because of the easy train commute from Hudson. Also Hudson has been revitalized by the city folk over the past 20 years though (thank goodness for them), with lots of antiques shops and restaurants. Averill Park and Nassau may be areas to look- but I don't know a lot about them.
I agree too.. Altamont is adorable.

Have you considered Round Lake? it is teeny but adorable and about 30 - 35 mins. north of Albany. Village of Round Lake, New York 12151
The areas around Saratoga Lake, Stillwater Stillwater, New York and Schuylerville Village of Schuylerville are also lovely.

I used to drive from Hudson to a bit beyond New Scotland Road in Albany in about 40 minutes, and I always drove the speed limit or under. It was an easy drive--not stressful at all--except when roads were icy. My sister in law lives in Stuyvesant and goes to the Public Health Building (not sure where in Albany) and she says it takes her 30 minutes in good weather.
Valatie to Albany is a breeze.

I agree with Altamont. It is a small rural town about 30 minutes away from Albany. The homes are mostly charming 1800's to early 1900's Victorians or Farmhouses that can range in price from $170,000 to $400,000. It is in the Guilderland School District which are great schools with school bus service at door. The thing is that homes aren't for sale very often in this area so keep checking. Hope this Helps!

Clifton Park is very nice - just up the Northway and it's pretty easy to get everywhere from there.

30 minutes from downtown Albany is northern Columbia County. It's rural, you can find a very nice place for between $230,000-300,000, either in a village or out int he country, friendly people, there are lots of people here who work in Albany, the taxes are much friendlier than East Greenbush or Albany County. Major road is Route 9 in the county, I-90 exit 12 will get you right there. Horse country also. Lived here 17 years now. Love it.

Also try looking at Northern Greene County, Its a 25 min drive up 32 to Albany or take 87 if your near the thruway. The small towns are nice and safe. Cheaper than Columbia County plus theres nice land.
