The opulence on Albuquerque's "skid row" makes the Wall Street Journal...

This is such an Albuquerque kind of story and speaks to the "extremes" of our city that come up in the forum from time to time. Why not stick a Parisian-style mansion smack dab in the middle of urban squalor?

The Castle on Skid Row

Thoughts?

It'll make a great homeless shelter when she's gone...

So much could be done with the old ATSF maintenance yard if this was a larger city.
If it survives long enough and Albaquirky starts becoming urbanized, it'd be fantastic for
re-purposing into retail, restaurants, offices, lofts / apartments, etc.

From a December 2009 photo shoot at the ATSF yards..

How skid rowish is it really? As someone who doesn't yet live in the city, I know there are several condo projects within a couple blocks that start around $130K and go up to $700K. This may be another of this ladies shrewd real estate investments.

I'm with this lady, I love living in downtown areas of cities.

It ain't high class, but compared to really large cities, it's not a real skid row, either.

Some of those projects you're looking at are probably not really "downtown" and may
not be moving forward.

I've never heard of it being called Skid Row by anyone before. I do know that they do quite a bit of filming across the street though, I've seen film crews there on a few occasions. I've passed by the property several times and always wondered what and why!!

I've seen her a lot at a local auction house which advertise some of their items as European imports, while being there I've seen her purchase a considerable amount of stained glass amongst other "antiques".

Great photos.
Have you seen Bill Tondreau's photo of the machine shop - Albuquerque Landscapes.
Of course all of his are pretty spectacular - Albuquerque Landscapes.

Spectacular hardly seems apt considering this guy is a photographic genius in every sense of the word. Thanks for the reference to the web site. No one could expect to get his result straight from the camera, regardless of the quality of the camera. He knows his digital enhancement - to say the least.

"Antiques collector"? Isn't she a jewelry designer or are there two Gertrude Zachary's in town?

She is a jewelry designer, and also operates retail that does jewelry antiques and other stuff.
I'm not sure why anyone wouldn't like what she's done (not my taste, but she apparently loves it) with her own money. Would yet another trash strewn waiting for "re-development" lot be better?
She's no spring chicken, but she's done something good in that area and I hope she enjoys it for years to come.
