As for my car, I can't imagine not filling it all the way up.
I use a credit card and just charge it. ( I'm such an animal. )
The last time I filled up was March 20th. Gasoline was probably
$1/gallon less on that date. I might need gas again by May 5 or
so, but maybe not. My car requires premium, so it is likely to be
a $50+ fill-up ( but the tank will last till July ).
The only way my car is going to end up on the side of the road
is if it breaks down. In that case, I'll hire a tow right away.
I just don't get leaving one's car by the side of the road for an extended period.
As for my car, I can't imagine not filling it all the way up.
There was a time, many years ago in a far off land, that I did not fill up with gas as it was too large of an investment for a clunker which cost $5.00 to $25.00.
I just read yesterday in the paper about AAA is seeing a big increase of cars running out of gas.
And if you watch carefully, at the station, wander around and look at pump totals you'll be flabbergated at both the high's and low's.
I saw a big gas-guzzling SUV pull into a neighboring pump the other day, in and out in just a minute or two. Walked over, and? $4.50! Go figure!
Well, here's one theory: this woman was keeping her fingers crossed that en route to work she might find another station selling it for 5-10 cents less, and there she'd splurge and put in $10 worth!
But all pain dissipated a couple weeks ago, when I saw a van pull in, and load up with 39 gallons: $150! If that were me, I wouldn't have driven very far, as the tears would have clouded my vision the next few blocks!

Reason: edit
One time I was driving through the night from Colorado through NM and I missed a gas station but didn't feel like turning around, I was sure there would be another one. I didn't run out but I was driving on fumes.
Lately though I've been seeing a lot of cars on the side of the road where there are plenty of gas stations open all night that accept cash and cards so I suspect it may have to do with the economy and rising gas prices. More flat tires also so I suspect some has to do with the economy longer term where people put off getting new tires.
This is super old, but I had the same question recently whole driving from Santa Fe to Denver, so I stopped and asked a local.
They are "picking pinon" which can sell for "up to $40 per pound".
