Sounds like my kind of place. ^_^ Congrats on your daughter graduating from MSU. I just graduated from there myself (MA in English). As much as I don't mind MSU, I will not miss Mississippi.

I'll definitely check out the places people have linked to (esp if they're free, I still need to find work). Thanks, everyone, for the welcomes and for answering.

You seem to have the right attitude, wscottling, so I'm sure you'll do fine. If the apartment is a cozy and nice as it seems to you, then that is great (and with a 6 month lease, you can be out in no time).

The South Valley is an interesting area, for sure. It often takes an adventuresome spirit to move to Albuquerque, let alone one of the more "old-school" New Mexico areas like the South Valley. So, expect something completely different. As has been mentioned, it sounds like you've got a great attitude, you might just love it.

Thanks, y'all! My train leaves in a couple of hours, and I'm pretty excited... both to be finally getting the heck out of Mississippi and to be moving to New Mexico. I realise it's going to be a hell of a change, but I'm ready for it. I've been in The South for way too long. I actually said "you might could do that" to someone the other day. >_< It's definitely time to go when you start picking up the dialect.

Make sure you spend a lot of time at the Frontier Restaurant.

The Frontier? For both the food and atmosphere, and even history? They have been there 40 years.

Frontier Restaurant in Albuquerque, New Mexico, 2007:

Front counter(s):

Limited parking in the rear, I usually just find a spot on the street:

Interesting outside mural around the side, the flowers, wagon wheels etc are painted:

How about the K&I Diner? I've not been but know people who have sworn by it. Also, my wife has taught at the South Valley CNM (community college) branch and enjoyed it. Occasionally, though, the custodians or security guard will have to round up stray chickens or shoo them off campus.

I any case you can use some of the six months to find another place if you don't like this one.
