You said that you are familiar with the area, but for lurkers and you ( if you forgot ), you should expect
morning temps in the 40's. It is not totally out of the question that it could be below freezing on the
top of Sandia Crest. Bring a backpack and dress in layers with hat and gloves.

Thanks for the reminder. It's going to be 104 degrees in Austin today so cold weather isn't even on my mind.

We made that mistake on our Honeymoon at the Grand Canyon March of 1991. Rented a car in Phoenix, wearing shorts and t-shirts, and got to Flagstaff which was covered in snow and very cold. Had to buy warm clothes there. Don't need a repeat of that!

In 1986, on the Friday of the Festival, it started snowing and Saturday, I was X-country skiiing
on the UNM golf course. It was one of the three biggest snowfalls I have ever seen in the city.

Even if the festival doesn't get snow, it could still dump a foot of snow in Santa Fe or the Crest.

Last year, it was very warm. Neither of those two things have any relevance other than what "can" happen.

I will be flying to ABQ for the balloon festival from Virginia. It will be my first time there and I want to go up in a balloon. Reading the information on their website says that there's only one hot air balloon company that launches from the field during the festival. They charge $395 per person. Does anyone know if other balloon companies charge as much during that week?

Anyone recommend any particular companies? I will call around but I thought I'd ask here first. thanks

I think others do rides but not from the park. There are several other launch areas in Abq. Just Google hot air balloon rides Albuquerque.

They do launch from several places off field. They are just not related to the festival.

Wow, Rich... I'm glad the ones at Enchanted Hills took off... just around the corner at Vista Grande, they decided it was too windy, packed up, and loaded up.

I was talking to the three crews, two of the other pilots chose not to risk the winds. It happens.

Just a post trip note to say we have a wonderful time on our short ABQ getaway. Stuck to the itinerary of landing Thursday and visiting Sandia Tram, Turquoise Trl drive to Madrid, then Santa Fe, then back to ABQ to check into hotel.

Friday morning got rained out but we were there really early (5AM) wandering around and stumbled upon the pilot briefing. That was very interesting, especially the penalty portion where violators were called out and told to report to various officials and FAA people to discuss their infractions. Then we walked around and visited the museum and shops in between rain showers. Then went to Old Town.

Saturday, when I thought initially we'd only have time to park and watch, it was magnificent. Saw the big liftoff, including some of the special shapes that couldn't go up Friday morning. Then to the airport.

Overall, a big thumbs up. The people were nice and we really enjoyed the visit.

Here is my favorite photo I took.
