Can anyone recommend a very good hairdresser experienced with Black hair (relaxer, roller sets, total hair care--not just style)? I recently relocated to ABQ and I'm having a hard time finding a hairdresser to do my hair. Thanks!

First off ABQNOW, I just want to welcome you to the land of enchantment!!!!!

I also have to ask what you mean by Black hair? Simply dark hair, or like a black person's hair? Either one, I would think you could go to any decent stylist and they would know what they are doing.

My wife has tried everyone and anyone, and I think that you will just have to do some good searching to find a good hair stylist. Perhaps an AVEDA or Mark Pardo, but they are so damn expensive that it may not be an option.

Either way, I wish you nothing but the very best of luck!!!!!

.. Thanks for your reply. I should have been more specific...I was referring to a Black person's hair.
I like Albuquerque a lot so far... just need to find a hairdresser who is experienced with my type of hair. Thanks for the good wishes!

This may not be helpful, but maybe you could give it a shot -

I have a "natural" Black person's haircut, and I was on the lookout last time I was in Albuquerque for hair places. I saw a braid shop on the corner of Kathryn and San Mateo. I know this is not what you're looking for, but maybe they might have some ideas if you stop in. Good luck!

Hi ABQNow! Did you ever find a good salon for African American hair in the Albuquerque area? My husband and I are looking to relocate from Seattle to NM next year and so far I cannot find a salon either. Please let me know what your research has turned up. Thanks so much!!!

Yes I did! It took a while, but I eventually found a fantastic beauty and barber salon very centrally located. The salon name is Anointed Hands on 4200 Wyoming Blvd. NE (near Montgomery Blvd); phone is 505-292-5707. The salon is owned and operated by Dennis and Thomasine Hubbard. You'll like it!
Good luck with your move.

Thank you so much!!! It's so hard to find good stylists, especially when a relaxer is involved. We've been looking at Rio Rancho lately and I told my husband that although we love the area from what we've seen of it so far, the lack of a good salon could be a deal breaker.

I don't know much about Rio Rancho (I'm still pretty new to ABQ and live in the southeast part of the city); however, I'm sure there are good salons in Rio Rancho too. It's just a question of finding them.
All the best!

Im glad someone asked, I recieved some good news from Forestry out there about a job and I know the black community is so small there where to get my hair done was one of my first thoughts(not really, but you know). I did find a website NMBLACK.COM - Link to New Mexico Soul Community! that lists different community events and black owned businesses, churches etc. I didn't see anything about hairdressers maybe I could try to email them about adding a section about that.
