This thread has morphed into something fun to read! Thanks for all the well links and the pronunciation and cultural nuances that an outsider wouldn't know right off. There's a massive amount to learn regarding wells when in a very dry state. Coming from Washington, water is never an issue, except for quality. Quantity, not at all!

As for the pronunciation, I'm totally enjoying everything everyone's posting. I have an acquaintance who grew up in ABQ and when I asked her how to pronounce Rio Grande yesterday, she said "Rio Graunday." When I asked about just saying it "Grand," she considered this and said she'd heard this as well, but all her life she'd always given it the second syllable and pronounced it the Spanish way.

Thanks for all the minor tips about when to pronounce what and what NOT to do, ever, unless I want to be a neon sign for "not from around these parts, are ye?" I grew up in San Diego, so I've got my share of mispronunciations from visitors and the newly arrived. I love La Jolla the best...La Hoya, but I've often heard it pronounced phonetically. Oh, how jarring to the ears!
