We just got back from a house hunting trip and found a nice town home to rent. We got to explore the city (especially the various brew pubs).

We also took a quick drive up to Santa Fe (love that 75 mph speed limit). Beautiful country (quite a change of scenery from north Alabama).

I am visiting ABQ for two nights and was thinking of an Airbnb near the old town area - there are some cute casita rentals there - is it safe or are there better areas to book a room at. Any recommendations?

So far, the Uptown seems to be the nicest area on the east side but it's really the size of a large parking lot. It's not exactly a neighborhood, I don't think. They do have some nice rentals . If I were going to stay here long term, I would consider renting there. They might be pricey though.

Correct, it is not a neighborhood...

Uptown Albuquerque is the area containing the Coronado Center, Winrock Town Center and ABQ Uptown shopping malls along with office buildings, hotels and apartment buildings. It is a district of the city that functions like a suburban edge city. The core of Uptown Albuquerque is about one square mile in area. The center of the district is Louisiana Boulevard and Indian School Road. Its origins date back to the 1950s and it really accelerated in development with the opening of Winrock Center in 1961. Most of the office buildings and hotels were built in the 1970s and 1980s. Coronado Center was opened in 1964. The ABQ Uptown lifestyle center was built in 2006. ABQ Uptown is distinct from the Uptown Albuquerque district, of which it is a part of and named after.

An aerial picture of the area from the time the elevated urban Target store was being built in about 2014. Winrock Town Center is just out of view to the left center of the picture:

Old Town Albuquerque is safe and a nice area that caters to tourists, you should be very happy staying in that area.

Some of the motels I have seen around Old Town make Motel 6 look like Ritz- Carlton.

If one wants luxury and a high-end experience in Old Town, Hotel Chaco is the way to go. It sits at the very border between Old Town and the emerging Sawmill District. It was named one of the ten best hotels to open nationally in 2017 by USA Today. It is very popular with tourists and visitors right now. It features the Level 5 restaurant and bar with viewing deck that is one of the hottest gathering places in Albuquerque at the moment. Its ground floor features commercial spaces that are starting to be filled in with tenants. Crafted wine bar is getting ready to open soon as the first tenant.

The $24 million Sawmill Market is under construction across the street from Hotel Chaco and will be a 34,000 sq ft food hall with two dozen tenants.

Hotel Chaco is located adjacent to its sister property, the Hotel Albuquerque, which is a very nice hotel as well, with lots of character. It's popular for weddings and has a northern New Mexico-style capilla or chapel. There is also a very beautiful pavilion for outdoor weddings on the hotel grounds.

Who is telling OP to stay in a motel? There are lots of really charming neighborhoods around Old Town with beautiful homes characterized by unique NM style.

Here is a sample Airbnb within walking distance of the plaza. I am jaded on New Mexico chic and even I wouldn't mind spending a weekend in a nice little place like this.
