Hi you all,

We need your help in getting a clearer picture of what the following "neighborhoods" are like, since we have the opportunity to rent an apartment in either of them (need I precise we are moving cross-country, without having ever been to Albuquerque before???)

so here it is:

-Tingley Beach (The Beach apartment complex)

-Coal Avenue sw (Villa de San Felipe apartments)

-Montgomery boulevard, right of the freeway (Penn square apartments)

-Louisiana Boulevard NE (Telegraph Hills apartments)

We are partial to the first two, because they are within 5miles of work (for me) and school(for my partner), but since I read somewhere in another NM forum that Tingley Beach is like "taking your own life in your hands" (or something like that), I am a mite worried.

So dish it out, no holds barred.

Thanks in advance

I first and foremost recommendm the Telegraph Hill Apartments. This would be in the safest part of town out of all 4. Wait for some other replys though before you make a decision.

Telegraph Hill Apts and the neighborhood is very nice and the best out of the 4 places as they used to be with our management company back in the late 90's. Only thing i don't like about them is you have to drive to the stores, shopping etc..as they are not in walking distance. It's a ''bedroom community'' neighborhood (mainly all housing).

I used to live at Penn Square Village apts (new name now Candelight apts??)and they have really fixed them up since the late 90's when i lived there. What i like about Penn Square is it's right on Montgomery Blvd where everything is right there. Shopping Centers, Resteraunts, Health Clubs, Doctors/Dentists, Grocery Stores etc... which are across the street and down each way of Montgomery Blvd and a Smiths Gocery store right there and also across the street is R Downs health food store (best in abq) where i get all my vitamins and weightlifting protein powders etc...Infact a 7/11 is next door as most residents walk to it.

Just don't live in an apt facing Montgomery as the traffic noise is bad day and nite as it's a busy corridor.

The Beach apts are right next to the Rio Grande River and Bosque River Trail and Zoo/Botanical Gardens as i believe that's the Five Points area....Never lived there but the apts look very nice on the outside of them. If your into the Bosque Trail i.e. Hiking/Biking and Fishing at Tingley Beach then i'd at least explore them. Just not sure good or bad of the area there??

San Felipe is in Downtown and i believe they are new or remodled apts and they have really fixed up Downtown over the years. You'd need to be an urbanite to enjoy that area. It wouldn't be for me as i'm a small town desert/country person who needs open space but for those who love all the Cafes and Shops and Action of Downtown then you may like it.

Anyway that's my take on them.

I have a friend who has lived in Tingley Beach for years. He has never had a problem and loves the location. He bikes a lot and loves the convenience of the trail for biking and taking his dogs for walks. I had looked for an apt there and there were none available when I was in ABQ. My friend says the manager is great...I think she even walks his dog for him when he can't get away for lunch.

Antoine Predock designed the Beach apartments. It's not a bad area at all (don't let the wieners frighten you). I was looking at the prices and it seems reasonable to me.

I think the issue with the Beach is that a large portion were designated Section 8 or low-income. Can somebody verify this?

I've never heard that, but all you have to do is call the complex and ask in order to know for sure.

I worked with a lady who lived at The Beach apartments and she really like it. I, myself probably would not want to live in that part of town. I used to live down the street from Penn Square and I never had a problem there. It was in a convenient area. My complaint about it is that Montgomery is a busy street so the traffic would bother me at times... But all in all I had no major problems in that area.
