Does anybody have the new analog police/fire scanner frequencies, if there are any? I know the APD/AFD/BCSO/BCFD system is an encrypted Provoice Digital system, but there were several APD/AFD dispatchers broadcasting on some open analog frequencies. I had the analog system trunked on my scanner, but lost the broadcast after the digital tv transition.

Would a police scanner with 800Mhz that costs between $80-$150 be a good buy or would I be purchasing something that would be considered 3rd rate? I have been thinking about getting one so I can tune into the many radio frequencies listed on radioreference.com that do not have live audio.

Thanks.

Since this thread was first posted I've sold the scanner, and now use an Android App called "Scanner Radio" that streams a live feed (from RadioReference) of emergency services in the Albuquerque area, including APD/AFD. It also streams from other areas nationwide.

I don't know that I would call an $80-$150 scanner 3rd rate. If there are frequencies available, any scanner should do the job. The price difference would be in the bells & whistles.

Why would you need something like this unless you were planning on breaking the law?

Millions of people have listened into Fire, Police, Aviation, Government frequencies for years as a hobby.

It is not illegal.

If the police don't want you to listen, then they can encrypt the message traffic.

The legality of radio scanners varies considerably between jurisdictions. In the United States it is a federal crime to monitor cellular phone calls. Some US states prohibit the use of a scanner in an automobile. Although scanners capable of following trunked radio systems and demodulating some digital radio systems. I am not aware of any specific New Mexico laws prohibiting the reception of radio waves in New Mexico...

As an amateur/hobbyist photojournalist/journalist, I like to know what is happening where.

It also helps with knowing road closures. Sometimes a sigificant "situation" will cause an entire area to be closed off.

I have a scanner and listen to police / fire / ham / air traffic control, etc. on occasion. It's purely for entertainment, just to hear what is going on.

There is even an iPhone App which is a Police/Scanner and last time I checked Bernalillo was listed on the App.
