I don't drink alcohol all that often because I am watching my weight. Yesterday I opened a bottle of Prosecco to share with hubby, he had a 1/2 glass, so I pretty much finished the bottle. I was buzzed quickly and I wanted to eat everything insight. I woofed down my dinner like it was my last meal and before that I ate a handful of ritz crackers. Why does alcohol do this?
I don't think there is a clear explanation why drinking a lot makes some people hungry.
I've heard theories that that the carbs in wine and beer and cocktails trigger insulin production, or that alcohol stimulates the hypothalmus, or that alcohol overwhelms the normal control mechanisms that regulate hunger and eating, or that alcohol attaches to neurotransmitters so we feel mellow and uninhibited so we don't feel guilty about eating.
Like I said, I don't think there is a clear explanation...
"Alcohol suppresses fatty acid oxidation, increases short-term thermogenesis and stimulates a number of neurochemical and peripheral systems implicated in appetite control, including inhibitory effects on leptin, glucagon-like peptide-1, and serotonin, and enhancement of gamma-aminobutyric acid, endogenous opioids and neuropeptide Y. All of these effects could lead to overeating, and mechanisms underlying appetite stimulation through alcohol require further substantiation."
In other words, it messes with the hormones that control appetite. It inhibits the ones that tell you that you're full and to stop eating, and it enhances the ones that stimulate appetite. (And yes, there has been further substantiation of these effects since that paper was published 10 years ago. I am just too lazy to look it all up.)
actually many people I know, when the drink too much don't want to eat or certainly not as much. For me, I would say, I eat less when I have overdone the wine.
I do the same thing, and I KNOW why! Because it suppresses ALL inhibitions! If I didn't stop myself constantly, I would eat like a pig. Evidence is the fact I used to weigh 40 pounds more than I do right now. I have to constantly diet, and if I've been drinking the first thing I want to do when I get home is stuff my face! The part of my brain that tells me not to do that is suppressed by the alcohol, no doubt.
