I am an older woman, in my fifties and not in any danger of being taken advantage by anyone, but I occasionally would like to go to a local bar and have a drink. There's a nice local restaurant that has a good bar patronized by people who are beyond what I call the fetus stage, and it's very comfortable. I only go when a friend comes to visit from out of state because her mother is in an assisted living near me; however, I'd like to feel comfortable going there for a drink on my own, maybe with a book. My only hesitation is that I DON'T want to be seen as some washed-up floozy who is looking to be picked up. I remember being young and seeing those fifty-something woman, usually with bleached blonde hair, hanging out at the end of the bar waiting for the last drunk to take them home.

What bar is that, Mightyqueen? The one with the floozies waiting to be taken home ...
Please give us the name, address, hours of operation, and best time to pick up floozies.
Nothing wrong with it, man or woman, sometimes you just want a drink alone, someplace different from where you always are. At home, I have a full bar, Whiskies from all over the place, but sometimes, I just want to have a quiet drink in a bar.
When I was in England on a research trip I had many of my meals in local (not touristy) pubs. I just took a book with me and I felt perfectly fine eating and drinking by myself -- I clearly wasn't there for any pick-ups. I liked the pubs!
When I (a woman) drink alone which I have many times I felt like stopping and having a drink and I happened to be alone. Nothing more, nothing less. Too much is read into things humans do that is considered outside of the societal norm just because "some 50 year old floozie (I'm 52 by the way) is sitting in a bar alone". Perhaps she is not a floozie she just chose to sit at the bar, which I do when I am alone. It means nothing outside of the fact she is in a bar, alone, having a drink.
