ok...i am in my 2nd month of bunion surgery recovery and heard epsom salts can help reduce the inflammation as i walking again...i have been icing for the past 2 months, but some have said epsom salts are more effective. Is it just a powder that i pour into a bucket and fill with water? then just soak my foot in it? thoughts anyone? i have never used this before. thanks.

Hello JL - I happen to have a carton of Epsom Salt right here. It's cheap enough (couple dollars), and I wouldn't say it could hurt at all. I've not had a bunion/surgery, but if the recommender experienced relief from it, I think it's worth a try. Dilute in warm/hot water (stir a bit), and yes, soak.

Also, you may want to consider topical iodine ('hospital antiseptic solution' - non-alcohol) - if the inflammation is close to the surface. It's also cheap and very effective for external use.

Wishing you well with this!!

As long as the stitches are out and the incision is fully healed, a hard-core footbath with epsom salts will probably feel *amazing* to you. Fill it with very warm water - as warm as you can stand it, warm enough to turn your skin pink. Add a heaping palmful of salts into the hot water, and dip a foot in to stir it around. Add the other foot, and relax.

I have a carton of Epsom salt in my emergency first aid kit and in my bathroom cupboard. I soak in a warm bath of Epsom salt to help my sore muscles. It also helps healing, when my canines injure themselves, it helps prevent infection and speeds the healing process.

There are cautions about use if you are a diabetic. So, do your homework, read the labels.

Yes, you can use Epsom salt, which is magnesium sulfate, in warm water for swelling, bruising, sprains, arthritis, fibromyalgia, psoriasis, insomnia, after workouts and other things.

You will absorb the magnesium transdermally, bypassing the GI tract, so use caution if you are taking extra mag orally so that you don't get too much.
