I would say similar to a town of the same size in Brazil. You need to understand that the North of Brazil, Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana, in my view, are still "no man's land". I would consider it similar to the American Wild West in the 1800's.
There is a lot of conflict between Natives, gold miners, farmers and there is a lot of drugs, human trafficking, corruption, it is a very uncivilized part of the world overall!
I am sure you could find some cheap land there and you could probably live OK in Guyana but I would do a lot of research before going into something that.
I have thought about buying some land in the state of Roraima, it was very cheap but you get what you pay for, it is very isolated, the infra-structure is poor, local police is very corrupt and it is not uncommon for people to take justice into their own hands.
Dude, I just bought some acres in the state of Goiás ( near the town of Uruana) . Believe me, you'll not regret! Besides, Portuguese is something you can learn.
