Hey Ausir, where are you currently located? And how do you like where you are now. I just received word that my house is being foreclosed on and I have about a month left before they toss me out. We're a couple of generations apart, but we are like minded in a number of ways, like wanting to escape the clutches of the machine.

He's in the same place he was in July 2013, in Chicago dreaming of a fantasy country that will allow Americans to move there without any money or health insurance.

If you are older and have Social Security you might have a shot at getting in.

You might be able to pull of trying to live like a local. But, sometimes locals won't let you live like a local. Sometimes there are small expectations that because you have an American passport, you must somehow have more access to wealth than they'll ever have. So there is always the little bit of overcharging here and there, the official paperwork stuff to make things legal that are designed to siphon a bit more from your pocketbook, and on and on. Your rent is just a little higher than the locals, your friendly neighbor who first appears to just be helping you out, suddenly asks for a little compensation for helping you out, etc.

As an expat abroad for many many years, I've regularly heard this 'we intend to live like locals', but I don't think I've ever seen that particular said thought actually materialize in reality.
