It's also cheaper as flights to Bogota from everywhere are dirt cheap ($48 dollars return from Miami, $500 return form London) and a return flight to Leticia is about US $110.

That's another option...

But the Amazon river in the state of Para is beautiful too, and the river banks are mostly wild, the urban spots are still rare

I always thought gringo meant non-Latino caucasians.

In Brazil even Latin American football players form other countries are known as Gringos.

The word has different connotations in different countries.

That's a difficult problem to solve. We are really geographically isolated from most of the world here. But less isolated than Australia, I think.

Split it up, that's what I do when I travel long haul, you get to have 2-3 holidays in one.

Every Saturday there's a direct flight to and from Fortaleza to Bogota for about $650 bucks return = 5.5 hour flight.

$50 bucks will get you a return ticket to Bogota from Miami on Viva = 3.5 hrs.

Miami 2 days, Bogota 2 days, N.Brazil 5-7 days. Sounds like a pretty sweet holiday to me.

Sao Paulo is even cheaper, about $450 return from Bogota = 6 hrs.

It's not a biased opinion. It's logical, if 1/3 of foreing tourists in Brazil passes in Rio and very few are assauted, Rio doesnt have a massive problem of violence relationed with tourists.

And what I see with my eyes is tons of tourists coming back to more visits, bringing new relatives/ friends.

But as I also typed, it doesnt mean that they can be as carefree as if they were in a very high developed place. Cautions are higher in a place like Brazil, even for brazilians.

I felt pretty safe in Rio, and I LOVED it! I would rather be there than in the South. lol I am already trying to see when I can go back.

Though I would suggest people to use cash more than credit, definitely limit the use of credit.
