You're absolutely correct. Most African-Americans are mixed race. As a result, African-Americans generally look noticeably different than blacks from West Africa, which is where AA's black ancestors largely hailed from.
Depending on the DNA test (though one really didn't need DNA testing to realize that AAs are mixed race), I'm generally estimated to be between 10-15% non-sub Saharan African, whereas my mother is a little higher. But I know AAs with even higher non-African mixtures who will absolutely not recognize their non-African mixtures, precisely because they weren't raised in those cultures or truly exposed to those other cultures (precisely for the reasons you mentioned).
