As far as I can tell, Iquique has better weather, less crime, and warmer water.

San Diego is nice for a Californian City. I've stayed in del coronado hotel, amazing place I remember. There is no comparison between Iquique and San Diego. I mean, sure Iquique is ok at the beach but the rest...

Likely not, but there are plenty of people who have odd notions bouncing around in their brains.

Better weather -No, Iquique gets almost no rain so yeah it's pleasant temps but it's foggy and almost never rains.

Less crime - I would say no, SD is a very low crime US city and while Chile is generally low crime for South America, still it would be more than SD is my guess based on travel to both.

Warmer water - not so sure about that, they get the Humboldt current along that coast which is very cold water.

I like Chile but if I were going to pick a spot on the coast, Vina del Mar is a better spot. The biggest difference is SD you can make a lot more $$$$$$$$$$$$$$
