Anyone in Nenana or Totek lake area care to visit??
I just bought land on Totek and I am wanting to come and do 'Dick Proenneke'.
I have spent my whole life learning how to survive off the land.
I have lived off the land on the plains and the mountains of Colorado.
Now its time to try Alaska!!

I do hope that you set your boots on the land before you purchased it.

There's road access to some of that land, right? Don't know much about the lake except that I heard it's shallow. Is there fish in it?

I'd honestly advise you to put more effort into foraging than gardening if you're going to live off the land. You can grow some things, but you can pick buckets of berries to freeze and can for later use.

There is no roads which is what I want, yes the lake is shallow and there are trout in it but most fish are the bottom of my list of liking to eat.

OK, so what are your plans? Do you need to build a cabin or did you buy property with a structure on it? Are you planning on heating with wood and if so, are there enough trees on your land?

The thing people screw up on the most is the wood. You need to chop wood every spare second if you are going to have enough wood.

Either that or heat with oil and have a few thousand gallons handy, like Sue does in Kavik.

Interested in how this turns out. Hopefully you will update this thread as things progress.
