East Anchorage is pretty sketchy, but there's also some decent townhomes tucked in there. I wouldn't move there without seeing the neighborhood in person.
Is the Crime visible? Well, I don't think you're going to witness drug deals and assaults unless you're looking for them, but Muldoon and parts of Boniface have a scuzzy feel.
You want to be in West our South Anchorage.....these areas are very family friendly. You'll find lots of people out and about, biking and enjoying the many parks.
I live in Eagle River which is very quiet and a short commute if you work in downtown or East Anchorage.

Don't get me wrong, I love AK and plan on moving back, but the crime is really bad in the Valley, at least Wasilly it is. Of the places I've lived, Wasilla is the worst I've ever seen. You can take this how you want due to me only living in small towns of 1200 of less and Wasilla is huge to me.

An interesting documentary I just saw. According to the video, Anchorage was relatively gang-free in the early 80s. The criminal activities from gangs blossomed at the time when many blue collar families from the lower-48 moved to Alaska to escape their local crime-ridden communes. In doing so, they unknowingly brought the problems with them. The gangs that established their stronghold in certain areas of Alaska are unlikely to move elsewhere, like to the lower-48 , so the unfortunate burden of crime here may persist for awhile.
