ABA EXPANDS TO ALASKA WITH THE NEW ALASKA DREAM

07-Jul-2008
Indianapolis, IN -- The American Basketball Association announced that the Alaska Dream has been added to its roster of teams for the upcoming season.

According to Joe Newman, ABA CEO, "We've been looking at Alaska for expansion for quite sometime. Basketball is very popular there as can be evidenced by the very successful Alaska Shootout. The problem has been transportation. We believe that has been worked out and as a result, we are adding the Alaska Dream to our 2008 schedule. Should anything happen, however, the team and we are prepared for a 2009 start."

The team will be located in Anchorage, Alaska and will be owned by Trey Davis, a graduate of American InterContinental University who is associated with the Boys and Girls Club of South Central Alaska and serves as a Teen Coordinator and Outreach Coordinator. Davis has ten years of experience as a Marketing/Events Coordinator organizing Home Shows, Fund Raisers and operating Men's Basketball Leagues as well as ten years of experience coaching youth basketball and organizing youth sporting events. A veteran of the U.S. Air Force, he attended Lakenheath American High School in England.

"We named our team the Alaska Dream because it has truly been our dream to have a professional basketball team, particularly an ABA team, here in Alaska and this is like a dream come true," stated Davis. The state of Alaska and the city of Anchorage, fans and sponsors all want the team here, but the problem has been finding a plan to reduce the cost of travel, and we believe we have accomplished that. It will be affordable for ABA teams to visit here and for us to do our road games on the Pacific coast. A win-win situation. There's no doubt that we have some great talent here and will be competitive. Plus, if this works out, we are aiming to put a team in Fairbanks next season. We really appreciate the ABA working with us to accomplish this."

Information relating to tryouts, Web site, personnel and other things will be announced shortly.

Anchorage to get pro basketball team

The American Basketball Association plans to add an Anchorage franchise to what would become a 46-team professional league beginning next season.

"We've been looking at Alaska for expansion for quite some time," said Joe Newman, the ABA's chief executive officer. "Basketball is very popular there, as ... evidenced by the very successful Alaska Shootout.

"The problem has been transportation. We believe that has been worked out and, as a result we are adding the Alaska Dream to our 2008 schedule. Should anything happen, however, we are prepared for a 2009 start."

Last season, ABA teams played a 22-game regular season from November or December through March.

ABA franchises span the country from San Francisco to New Jersey, with international franchises in such locations as Montreal and Monterrey, Mexico.

The team will be owned by Trey Davis, according to the ABA. Davis is a teen and outreach coordinator with the Boys and Girls Club of Southcentral with a background in marketing and events coordination.

"We named our team the Alaska Dream because it has truly been our dream to have a professional basketball team, particularly an ABA team, here in Alaska, and this is like a dream come true," Davis said in a press release.

He said Alaskans have long wanted a ABA franchise, "but the problem has been finding a plan to reduce the cost of travel.

"It will be affordable for ABA teams to visit here and for us to do our road games on the Pacific Coast."

The ABA, which is where the 3-point shot originated, combines international FIBA and NBA rules.

Davis said he's been working on an Anchorage franchise for about a year and is "very confident" that the team will play in the upcoming 2009-09 season. He said that the ABA charges teams $20,000 to get into the league, and he estimated annual expenses at $200,000.

"Travel is the main hurdle for us," he said. "Most teams go by bus."

He said he's negotiating with officials at Sullivan Arena to secure dates between December and May, working around the already scheduled Alaska Aces and UAA Seawolves hockey teams, which have most of the prime weekend dates locked up.

Depending on the outcome of those negotiations, he said, the home opener would be between Dec. 6 and 12. He estimated ticket prices would run $15 to $25 and that he needed an average home attendance of about 1,000 fans to break even.

And his hope is for a roster full of Alaska talent.

"That's what I want to do. That's what I'm going to do," he said. "Fill this team with Alaska players.

"There is no doubt we have some great talent here and will be competitive."

Come on people, come out and support the new team at Sullivan Arena!

Wow, I kinda hate to say this, but.... I'm in N. Carolina, this part of the world is somewhat well known for its' love of hoops and we have quite a collection of home grown talent, world class, but,....not enough to fill the squads of our four major school programs. We put a lot of talent into the pool for the pros, but do not have enough to compose an entire pro team of locals. If N. Carolina can not field a competitive team from local talent (a larger population base just in Charlotte than is found in the entire state of Alaska) I doubt that the avowed "fill this team from Alaska players" is a reasonable expectation. A noble idea, just not particularly practical. I do wish yall all the best and will follow the efforts of your team, cheering them on. I don't usually follow pro hoops, the college game is practically the state religion, hummmmmm, I wonder..... has anyone given any thought to making the team colors, Sky Blue and White?

At 6'-7" tall, I used to play a great deal of basketball ... 30+ years ago. Today, I just watch from the side lines.

As to team colors, what about the State colors of midnight blue and gold?

Sokaitis to coach the Alaska Dream: Sports | adn.com

Sokaitis to coach the Alaska Dream

Former UAF basketball coach Al Sokaitis on Monday was named head coach of the newly announced expansion ABA Alaska Dream team scheduled to begin play in December.

"We are so excited to have Al with us," team owner Trey Davis said in a press release. "He ... has a tremendous background with a great winning record. We will build a team that Alaska can be proud of."

Sokaitis, 56, recently was among five finalists for the UAF head women's basketball coaching job. He guided the Nanooks men for eight seasons (1996-2004). His 108-111 coaching record includes a 43-15 mark in his last two seasons, when Alaska earned back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Division II Tournament for the first time in the program's history.

One of the biggest highlights of his tenure was a victory over Weber State in the final of the 2002 Top of the World Classic at the Carlson Center, marking the first time in NCAA men's basketball history that a Division II team captured the championship of an eight-team Division I tournament.

He didn't leave UAF on good terms when he resigned in April 2004, citing communication problems with then athletic director Corey Schwartz.

Sokaitis is co-director of the Challenge Life Youth Foundation, an effort that focuses on bringing programs of mental and physical wellness to communities throughout Alaska with a concentration on the Arctic region.

"I am very excited to be a part of this great Alaska Dream organization," he said in a press release. "We are going to work hard to make this organization and this team one of the best ABA operations ever. We are ready."

The Dream now have a website, taking try-out information, and they have a logo. A pretty nice logo if I do say so myself.
