i'm thinking of moving to ann arbor for school, and i'm wondering if there's any good hiking nearby. by good hiking i mean trails that aren't too crowded and where dogs can be off leash (I know, not legally, but without people complaining too much as long as they are well-behaved (the dogs, not the people, although they could be well-behaved too)). are there any places like that within about 20 miles of the university?

Don't know about the dogs being off leash, but the Huron River, which is runs through A2, is dotted with parks from where it starts up in Livingston county all the way down to where it dumps into Lake Erie. Some of the parks which are designated nature preserves may not allow dogs at all. I know we have taken dogs to some. Here is their website:

May be a little far, but the Pinckney Recreation area (Roughly 20 min NW of town) has the areas best hiking in my opinion. There is an 18 mile loop starting at Silver Lake (See Michigan DNR website), and ends at the same spot. Very wooded, away from homes, a perfect spot to take your pet. They also, have shorter trail segments (2 and 8 miles) there as well. Have Fun!
