Spring break is upon us, and I'm curious to know what kinds of discussions are going on between parents of 18-22 yo about going to RP.
I am single, but I would probably say no way, even though I routinely disregard State Department warnings, and have been around the World six times.

I really like Hermosillo, and will probably buy a house there in the future--but now it's really bad down there. They are hosting the Serie de Caribe in 2013, I do hope things clear up.

Absolutely I'd encourage a young adult to go to RP.

The overwhelming majority of violence in Mexico is between Mexicans, look at how many Americans go to RP versus number who encounter violence.

I was in RP the last weekend in February and it was evident that many AZ folks have decided to vaction elsewhere. I took my 18 year old daughter with me and we did everything together. She mentioned coming back to RP for Spring Break and her dad and I quickly said NO. I just dont like the idea of a large # of kids parting "Like A Rock Star" in a foreign country. She was even going with one of her friends and their parents. But, I doubt the parents will be at the party with the kids. Too much could go wrong for someone I would give my life for!

My cousin used to go to Cancun. He said drunken students, who caused a disturbance, were taken to jail, and their parents were called and told that their kids needed to be on the next plane out of the country, which happened to be 3700 USD for a non-restricted, one way flight to New York. Better than getting kidnapped--maybe. But, the MTV Spring Break stupidity is far more likely to get them into trouble, than violence from the cartel(s). I know someone, whose daughter broke her back, when her ATV crashed at RP.

Not a chance! I spent over an hour talking with a border patrol officer while standing around outside the Los Algadones border crossing and he was very clear saying the cartels are moving this way from TJ and so is the violence. He said "I was born and raised in Mexico and I won't go there anymore" it's just not safe for anyone.
I asked about Algadones and he said "for a quick trip in and out on foot then you'd probably be ok "for now" but don't hang out for long periods.

Yes, the violence is primarily between Mexicans but bullets have NO knowledge of ethnicity when they're fired and don't check passports before hitting a target either on purpose or by accident, just ask the BP agent shot and killed a couple of weeks ago "supposedly" for driving a vehicle favored by cartels or the older couple fired upon because their pickup was popular to steal.
Personally I'd rather listen to someone who's "in the loop" and has nothing to gain by telling me not to go there.
The bottom line is you may well be fine this time but if something did happen to me or my kid because I didn't listen to warnings I'd never forgive myself. There are many other places to go.

As you see from the map below (drug related murders from Jan 1 - Oct 31 2010), Cancun is pretty safe.

I do know that Mazatlan for instance had 800 murders while Cancun area had about a dozen. I'd think twice about driving a newer SUV to RP especially if it is white.
