If you have the money, move to Cheney Ranch, in Linden. Lots of retired people, friendly, 1 acre lots, HOA, nice homes, trees, paved streets, only a little bit out of town. We loved it but had young kids so sort of felt out of place. Very peaceful.

Have fun!

Check out Juniper Ridge (google it since I understand we are not to give links on this forum). Juniper Ridge is a retirement community of ~ 500 park models and RV sites. It is 7 miles out of Show Low proper and is part of the White Mountain Lake Project - golf course homes, family homes, and airpark homes (with hangars) are currently under construction. An equestrian center is planned and you have access to White Mountain Lake, less than a mile away (fishing, boating, etc). Juniper Ridge has a par-3 9-hole golf course with an additional 9 holes presently being added - super cheap for residents - something like $150 yearly. Nearby Silver Creek is an 18-hole championship course with a great cheap little restaurant that looks out over the water. There is a nearby little dive with a great Friday nite fish fry. The White Mountain Lake Project's developer, Ike Isaacson, successfully developed the award winning Voyager Resort in Tucson. He bought Juniper Ridge several years ago as a bankruptcy from a Baptist organization and and it has just taken off. Juniper Ridge is his passion and residents are reaping the benefits. You can see all the amenities on the website. There are even cute little cedar "camping cottages" for friends to rent while visiting.

We bought a lakefront lot at Juniper Ridge in 2004 and put in a park model. We rent it out summers for now and are looking forward to retiring there in 3-4 years. Lots there have doubled since we bought ours - even with the hit that real estate in general has taken. There are still good deals to be had if you keep looking. We have a realtor friend who lives in Juniper Ridge and knows/sells the whole area if you'd like a referral.
