Hello,

My sister and I are thinking of relocating to Arizona, but I don't know what areas are safer areas for single women. We would both be looking for our own spaces but can't decide what we like. I have been looking at Sahuarita, Green Valley or somewhere around there, but someone commented to me that there are not many African american people in most parts of Arizona. They've heard of people being threatened and chased away and moving there might not be the best idea. Does anyone know what these areas are like? I have no problem whatsoever living in a diverse area, but I don't want to feel unwelcome in my own home.

thanks

Arizona is pretty diverse, based on race/political affiliation/young/old, You will probably fit in just fine. Being threatened or chased away.....pretty remote chance that happened....urban legend ?

Green Valley is known to attract retiree's....not that you have to, but do you fit that demographic ?

Green Valley:
Median resident age: 71.2 years
Arizona median age: 37.1 years
White alone - 20,075 (93.4%)
Hispanic - 927 (4.3%)
Asian alone - 202 (0.9%)
American Indian alone - 99 (0.5%)
Two or more races - 102 (0.5%)
Black alone - 80 (0.4%)
Mar. 2012 cost of living index in Green Valley: 92.0 (less than average, U.S. average is 100)
Elevation: 2903 feet

Hispanic - 6,269 (27.0%)
Asian alone - 962 (4.1%)
Black alone - 572 (2.5%)
Two or more races - 435 (1.9%)
American Indian alone - 242 (1.0%)

I have never heard of African Americans being chased away anywhere in AZ...whoever told you that is likely full of malarkey.

Folks here typically don't care who or what you are as long as you take care of your business and be a good citizen.

If someone comes in and causes problems, they will get problems,...white, black, hispanic, asian, male female, LBGT...whatever....doesn't matter.

Come on over, be friendly, and keep your nose clean and unless you just run into some idiot...(there are a few of them everywhere) you should do just fine.

Thank you! That's what I thought too, they are full of it lol.

Makes me feel better to hear it from residents though.

Have a wonderful day!

In general, you will find that the overwhelming majority of people in Green Valley and Sahuarita are friendly and pretty outgoing. Unless you insist on being unpleasant, people will accept you.

Do realize that a significant percentage of the Green Valley housing stock is deed restricted to 55+. Sahuarita is much more geared toward young families but much of the area has amenities similar to what you fing in Green Valley.

I have had a lot of fun in both areas ... maybe because I am at the median age of the entire community. (g)

By the way, the best way to get accepted into the community and to meet people is to get involved in the hundreds of volunteer activities in the area.

Thank you everyone for the positive feedback!

Does anyone know about any others areas? Just to name a few I have come across while searching: Gilbert, San Tan Valley, Laveen, Paradise and Oro Valleys?

You need to divide this up. You can ask about Oro Valley in the Tucson forum. The other four (Gilbert, San Tan Valley, Paradise Valley (there is the Town of Paradise Valley, a very affluent area, and a larger area of northeast Phoenix that is called Paradise Valley) and Laveen are all in metro Phoenix, although STV is at the furthest southeast edge of the metro and is actually in a different county. Ask about those in the Phoenix forum.

In both cases, you will get more helpful answers the more info you provide about what you are looking for, where the work location is, amenities you want to be close to, etc.
