Why not just get it? It is valid till you are 65, there is no test. Just give them the old one, they give you an AZ (mailed now) punch a hole in the old one and give it back.

Easy, painless, not too expensive. Plus it allows you to buy the guns you need to be a true Arizonan.

You have to go to DMV and retake vision test and get new picture, and depending on MVR, possible road test as well

Thought I would give some further update:

After doing more research I came up with no definitive answer.

It seems that if you are a snowbird and own a primary residence in another state, you really do have 7 months before you need to get an Arizona license.

As a person fully moving into the state, you apparently have 2 business weeks.

If you're gonna be an Arizona resident at least half the year, and getting a regular license, I think it would be worth it to switch over to an Arizona license. Good till you're 65, and after that it's every 5 years.

If you fly a lot, I would compare the various restrictions flying between your current state and Arizona. If you get a license that's approved for federal ID, I think the one for Arizona is good for 8 years.

That's one thing I like about Arizona. I wish other states would follow Arizona's driving laws.

With Arizona rolling out the REAL ID driver's licenses (April 2016) to comply with the federal Real ID Act, the new driver's licenses are now only good for 8 years, instead of expiring when you turn 65.

While the old "don't expire until your 65" licenses will still be valid to drive and not expire until you are 65, after October 2020 they won't be valid to pass through airport security to board commercial aircraft as well as access restricted areas in federal facilities, and military facilities. You'll have to use your passport, if you have one, or get a Voluntary Travel ID from the state of AZ for $25.

So it looks like those "don't expire until your 65" license days are going the way of the dinosaurs.

Will they have to take the written test if they renew their licenses?
