My husband was camping in Arizona and heard that they were going to be shutting down the coal power plant in Page Arizona. Is this really going to happen in a few years? Wouldn’t Arizona be perfect for solar power? Is it very expensive in Arizona?

1. Nobody knows for sure. Coal generation is uneconomic right now compared to natural gas. Native Americans are trying to keep the plant open to keep the jobs. Trump says he wants to push coal power even though it is uneconomic. (At least that's what he said today.).

Correct, the Abengoa Solana solar thermo plant is just north of mile marker 102 on I-8, about 10 miles west of Gila Bend. Here's an interesting article with more details. The plant makes about 280 megawatts of power, which is impressive for a solar plant but not much compared to a large fossil fuel power plant.

The Page coal power plant results in air pollution that is often carried by wind currents into Grand Canyon, so it is not surprising that it will be shut down. The reason that big power plant is located in Page is due to a supply of coal nearby. The Page power plant uses water from the Colorado River (Lake Powell) to fill the boilers, which are heated by the burning of the coal. The steam from boilers drive steam turbines that churn out 2250 megawatts, equal to nine of the solar plants near Gila Bend. The Page coal plant is the largest coal fired power station in the western USA.
