Looking at moving to the Phoenix and Tucson area. The HABOOB is a no starter for me.

What about Sierra Vista ??

Hoboobs originate in areas with large tracts of fallow land devoid of vegetation. Sierra Vista lacks both.

Haboob 101.

In the 6 years I've lived in Benson (1/2 hour north of SV) I've seen one haboob. It was clearly visible as it approached Benson from the east and kind'a scary looking. As it turned out when it actually hit it was quite thin and didn't really obscure much of anything. Further east when it was in western New Mexico it caused a major pile up on I-10 resulting in several deaths. It didn't stretch far enough south to affect SV.

Too much grassland in SV. Haboobs require bare soil to have dirt/dust to pick up. Big Haboob areas around here are near Wilcox and Casa Grande. The Casa Grande one tend to be the ones that affect Phoenix. Lots of farmland in both those areas so there's always fallow lands that are ripe for having dust picked up.

Dust storms are literally nothing more than an annoyance. I know they look intimidating on the news but in reality they affect my life zero percent.

We lived in Willcox, AZ, for 3 years and 8 months. Never saw one haboob. Look to Phoenix, AZ, for big haboobs.

Wasn't there recently a Willcox-area rancher responsible for creating a bunch of dust storms, interfering with I-10 travel, because he refused to treat his dust bowl of a ranch?

Edit: I guess it was a farm, and it was closer to San Simon, but travelers had to take a 100-mile detour at Willcox toward Safford to get around it.

Yeah, that happened several times as a result of that guys' land.
There's been other such dust storms in the area as well.
This was one just this last summer that shut down I-10:

This dust storm caused pile up on I-10 near Wilcox killed 6 a couple of years ago:

Here's a video by famed cinematograghy Mike Oblinski of a haboob near Wilcox back in 2013:

When a dust storm aproach, just pull of the road, turn lights off and wait it out. They never last a long time.

"turn lights off" .....ever been guilty of following tail lights of the car in front of you...maybe due to heavy snowfall or fog....I have. Don't be the person on the side of the road during a dust storm....with your lights on.
