Hi all,

Google maps shows two routes:
1) Highway 87 from Scottsdale to Payson, then 260 to Show Low, Pinetop. 175 miles.
2) Highway 101 South to Highway 60 East 192 miles

For us, we'd trade a few tens of miles if it was straighter road, vs a shorter distance, but full of switchbacks climbing up and down.

Any recommendations for the best road conditions and straighter, less windy curves?

Thanks.

I've traveled both routes. 87 up is easiest, fastest, and best improved paved road.

87 is easier but the climbs are pretty steep. The 60 is a cool drive though and is recommended if you’re doing any sight seeing

Like JGMotorsport64and wit-nit said...if you are just getting from point A to point B...take the 87/260. If you want to go through a rarely traveled area that is, honestly, gorgeous in some parts...take the 60. Be aware that the 60 past Superstition gets pretty twisty through the mountains.

Thanks for the tips. Maybe I'll take 60 going, and 87 coming back.
I might have skipped 60 based on the comments, except for the scenic opptys.

We did 87/260 both ways and loved it.

In Overgaard, Mogollon Airpark (AZ82) is a nifty place to drive around for a few minutes and see all the airpark homes with hangars. DH just sold his Cessna but should he buy another I wouldn't mind having a summer cabin up there at 6600 feet. Temps this week are in the low 80s. Nice.

Yes, Fluffy, temps are why I am gravitating there for the weekend, and perhaps a 2nd home or someplace I can decamp to in the summer. Plus they always seem to have good storm action from what I see on radar.

Sorry but I'm an AZ noob... who is DH?

DH is an online thing, referring to one's male spouse.

Considering he just pulled my office chair away as I started to sit down, the first letter doesn't stand for Darling today.

Yup, what everyone else said. US 60 goes through the Salt River canyon and is scenic and very windy. The canyon is very steep and cars go over the side all the time. AZ 87 (The beeline) is the quickest and easiest. But you missed a good storm yesterday, I'll describe it in the monsoon thread.

Oh fluffy, I'll bet that first letter does stand for a male appendage though . . . . .

Probably changed the "H" portion as well.
