We're camping up near Sedona, and heading home to Tucson tomorrow, the Friday before Labor Day weekend. We'd like to avoid Phoenix traffic.

What route would you recommend?

No 4 wheel drive roads, please.
Five hours or less? More than that, might as well brave the Phoenix drivers.

What’s it like living in dessert? Sounds delicious.

Most of the Phoenix traffic will be heading north, not south. Embrace the suck and just plow your way through it.

grmi66 is right. You could drive it at night. Even then I bet there will be heavy traffic. Especially between Phoenix & Tucson.

Default The original question wasn't answered.

Are there any alternate highways from Sedona to Tucson that bypass Phoenix? I guess the answer is no.

You can take I-17 south and then take the Phoenix alternate route 303 west (big sign off I-17 showing this) to the I-10. Go west on I-10 off of the 303 through Buckeye and then take the AZ-85 south to Gila Bend. From Gila Bend, take I-8 east to the I-10 south to Tucson. You will still likely hit some traffic on the I-10 in Buckeye going west depending on when you travel, but still better than going through Phoenix.

Looking at a map, the obvious route that completely bypasses Phoenix metro is Sedona -> Payson -> Globe -> Tucson. I've only been on a small part of that route, but I believe it's all paved roads. Since this is a holiday weekend there may be heavy traffic, and one accident can cause a long delay. Online map shows drive time of 5 1/2 hours, so it seems doubtful it could be done in the desired time (< 5 hours).

Wasn't too bad.
Glad we were headed south; there was a10-mile backup on 17 north, due to a car fire.
