Anybody here know anything about this new university started by and named after the president? How would a healthy straight single man do in this kind of environment? Just wondering what kind of dating opportunities would be available in the community. I know it is 70% Muslim and I'm assuming there is little blending of the sexes. Is the university run in the same way the country is- controlling and restrictive?
Much academic freedom or is it a 9-5 kind of place?
Well, the soviets did a pretty thorough job of marginalizing religion, so I don't know how strict Kazakhstan's brand of Islam would be at this point. I would guess not that strict at all. Astana also has a fairy large proportion of the population who aren't Kazakh or muslims at all, so really, on that end I expect you to be fine.
This sounds like a pretty amazing trip you're considering--I'd love to know about what it's like if you follow through on it.
Actually I'm asking for my 32 year old son who really loves the ladies and has been offered a job there. I'm hoping if I tell him he won't have sex for the three year contract they want him to sign he won't go!

Yes it's definitely more liberal than most of the Middle East, but it is still Islamic. There is more mixing of the sexes, I'd guess it's more like Turkey or Malaysia than Iran. If casual relationships is what he wants, I have no idea what it's like there.
