Spring Festival is around the corner, and firecrackers have already started puncturing the winter silence of the cold Beijing sky. Red decorations are everywhere, as are lots of people with suitcases hurrying home to family.
There is a building excitement among expats who have seen the likes of Chinese New Year in Beijing before, and the new foreigners are waiting in hopeful anticipation for the firework displays they have heard so much about.
I'm staying home in Guangzhou. The big cities are a great place to be because everyone else travels to smaller hometowns. Plus the weather in Guangzhou is great in the winter.
Im currently in my wife's mom's village of a few hundred in rural Hunan. Me, my brother in law, and two cousins walked to the town store, where everyone was playing cards or mahjong, and I got stared at a lot while we bought some waterproof fireworks to throw into the river and kill off the few schools of minnows that had managed to survive the pollution (one of the cousins lamented that a few years before, the river was "filled with fish").
Hundreds of millions of them travel from large polluted cities to small cities, towns or villages, where air quality is better. Probably not as clean as New Zealand or Canada, but an improvement nevertheless.

Except right now, even small mountain towns like the one we are in are smoky and smelly from all the fireworks... No joke. On the 28th, they were nonstop from morning till about 2am on the 29th... The smell and haze haven't lited yet and there are used firework containers all over, from the curb to the river.

I feel for you and that's extremely annoying. I always hated it since I was a teenager. Wait for the morning of Feb 1 where people start it again to welcome the God of Fortune, a nightmare.
Many large cities such as Shanghai have completely banned it and it work great (I was in Shanghai last Chinese New Year). So much more pleasant.
Its much better back in GZ as well. If they didnt restrict it, the city would have a weeks-long brown haze over it, smell like it'd been bombed, sound like Aleppo, and have a meter-deep pile of burnt red paper on the ground.
