^ that's one of the main reasons you'll hear it these days. China is by far the largest and most powerful nation in Asia, and it's soaring in economic power, as well. When people from a smaller, less-affluent and less-powerful nation like Vietnam, Mongolia, Tajikstan, or Bhutan see a huge, wealthy, powerful nation like China trying to insist that land in their country belongs to them, it's going to foment resentment.

Also, most Asian nations have an ethnically Chinese population, and as is the case in the West, many of them own businesses. Especially nowadays with import/export being a very lucrative business, Chinese people in those countries are more apt to have family connections or at least the ability to communicate in Chinese and get a leg up on sourcing goods to bring in and sell. That creates wealth within the community, and any time that there's relative affluence and stability in a community, you will hear allegations of "greed" (i.e.: Jews, middle-to-upper class white people).

Hong Kong is China, they just don't like Chinese mainlanders migrating to their city, because most of them have bad manners (spitting, littering, etc) and they don't really behave like HKers who are more modern. Beside HKers enjoys better freedom and aren't really communist ruled (1 country 2 policy) and also because they aren't part of China for a long time before ceded back, this separates them to how they view things as compared to mainlanders and creates some resentment towards communist government.

"Hong Kong not smaller and less powerful..."...

Have you ever looked at a map? How is HK not smaller and less powerful than China? seriously...Do you think a city with no defense of its own is equal to China with nukes and a massive military?

Hkers look down on mainlanders because of their cultural difference. But Shanghainese look down on HKers too. Beijingrs look down on everybody...It is just simple regionalism.

South Koreans look down on everybody because they think they are better than everybody else....it's an expression of their inferiority complex for having been sandwiched between CHN and JPN for so long, and used as a stepping stone by both.

Japanese think they are superior to all Asians....

So, Asia being so big and old, has plenty of prejudice to go around.

lots of Chinese mainlanders look down on the Indians because they are supposedly "smelly and dirty".......etc etc etc etc etc. It's all quite infantile, actually.

It's also because of the media. Western media often report negative news about China, but not so much positive news.
In some European countries it is even worse, the only thing you hear about China is human rights violation or "genocide" in Tibet etc.
