The problem is it is not even across the country -- the population has self-sorted into several large cities, with provincial cities emptying out (think Detroit.)
I think an old and feeble japanese population, completely addicted to a cushy life and having no desire or capability for war is always a good thing for everyone else in Asia and beyond.
A young, discontent, impossibly-gender-imbalanced, history-rewriting China with a slowing economy is much better for Asia, the rest of the world, and its animals, of course

Of course. At least they don't have weird sexual fetishes for dirty panties and tweenie-sex....And China is heading in the same direction, just 30 years later. But by then, Japan is long dead.

Yeah, Tokyo's population is growning even though the nations population is shrinking. That just means people are moving from other parts of Japan to Tokyo. The rural areas are becoming more desolate, especially the Tohoku region.
Yes. Japan does not have real estate bubble anymore.

Other developed economies in the world are also aging, have very long life expectancies and developed east asian economies have very low birth rates.
Singapore, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan are not going to shrink in population due to positive immigration numbers, immigration is higher than emigration. Few foreigners move to Japan. Restrictive immigration policies, big cultural shocks and bad economy are the reasons.

Out of curiosity--aren't many unmarried Japanese adults celibate?
What we're seeing in Japan will be seen in many other countries of the world, as the fertility rates keep falling/dropping, more and more 0, 1 or 2-child families.
Immigrants will also be harder to find, and it may come to that: bidding wars for immigrants.
Looking at the fertility rates around the world, I was surprised by the low fertility rate even Thailand, and even Vietnam at 1.8. The ideal fertility rate for any country is 2.3. And without the immigration in the U.S., the fertility rate would be around 1.7.

Some empty houses as well!
The japanese have a low birthrate partly because they are getting old, and partly because their men are kinky and have weird sexual proclivities...none of which are conducive to actual procreation.
