....NOT!

Just wanted to cause stir my fellow atheists up a bit with the title lol

Don't even bother responding if you're not atheist

But while we're on the subject, I find it funny how someone like Barry Bonds (we all know he juiced so lets not go debating it) wears the cross and would point up at the sky to "God" after hitting all those HR's and breaking the HR record. As if "God" gave him the strength to do it lol....I remember hearing him one time in an interview shortly after how he said his faith in "God" gave him the strength to set the new record.

What do my fellow atheists and agnostics think?

I think I would call it "guilt deflection". He feels guilty for cheating, and thus deflects the source of his advantage from his personal choice to the ultimate supernatural scapegoat, Goddidit.

Oh. Well, in that case I have to put the disclaimer out here that I'd rather hit myself in the face with a rusty hammer than watch sports/television.

I don't doubt that it's true that faith in this that or the other can give people the mental strength to accomplish things that maybe they wouldn't if they didn't have the motivation. I have heard of a violinist prodigy who was motivated to practice as a kid because of her devotion to Harry Potter. I have heard of an athelete who was always banging on about how his faith helped him to achieve his successes. He deconverted not that long ago.

Yes, Faith can give people a drive to win like anabolic steroids can. But it doesn't provide an atom of truth in any one of the faiths claimed to give people the will to suceeed, endure or oppress.

Is Barry pointing to God? I always thought he was pointing to a relative that died and was "giving him strength".
