That's great!

I hope that as the generations go by & the memory of segregation dies with the people who lived it, "tolerance" of others will eventually become ACCEPTANCE of others. Time is the ultimately healer of all wounds.

That's all I gotta say on this issue.

As far as the suburbs go, true gentrification may only be happening in the upper-middle class areas -- like Fayette, East County, North Fulton, Gwinnett. And this is most likely because of economic status and education levels -- the more successful, more educated you are (even if conservative) the less likely you are to fall victim to the "white flight" mentality that has plagued Clayton, DeKalb, South Fulton. I see it in my hometown of Fayetteville, which is right next door to Clayton's ghetto. But the prevailing attitude of most of the people who've been there for years is -- if they came here for the same reasons we did, they're our neighbors. Besides, many of the black families in Fayette are wealthier (and have more expensive mortgages) on average than the white families. It really is about economics, NOT race ... at least in this generation. Whites who'd welcome a black family moving in next door to them in the suburbs are just as likely to be comfortable moving back into the city.

If I was married and had kids I would head to suburbs too but since Im a single black professional there would be no need for me to live way out in henry county somewhere.. The only people that were forced out the city were the residents that were living in the projects, As the Atlanta area changes of course you are going to see more black, white asian etc moved within the city.
No city dwelling families are moving from ITP to Henry County, that's crazy talk. More families are moving back into the city if anything.

I wouldn't say it's crazy. For whatever reasons, I know several young, professional, affluent starter families who still prefer to raise their children in the suburbs. I know of 4 families who are looking in Peachtree Corners, Dunwoody, and North Fulton. They all currently live ITP now, but are looking to start a family. Not everyone dreams of an urban oasis for their family.

Now the latter is what I'm not yet seeing, particularly as far as Blacks go. I have yet to see some evidence of that. It still appears as though Black middle/upper class families are choosing the 'burbs over the city, and poor Blacks are being forced to the 'burbs due to gentrification. I don't think there are enough Black yuppies ("buppies") and DINKs to really be a significant sub-force, if you will, within this demographic shift. That goes for just about any city experiencing gentrification.
There are tons of blacks moving in the city. They tend to be younger and from other areas of the country(mostly other cities where density is greater). The only blacks moving out of the city or those usually born and bread.Thats not just poor, but others who are "moving up" the economic ladder who want quieter surroundings and a cheaper alternative.

You only have to also remeber that Atlanta being a "gay mecca" of sorts ,has a lot to do with people looking for a more urban and cosmopolitan lifestyle more conducive to those who tend to be single.

As far as "buppies" go,you must never hang out in Castleberry Hill? Not to mention many of those are former graduates from the A.U.C. that have bought condo's or rent apartments.Summerhill is another young neighborhood with a lot of Buppies.
Whats a DINK?

The facts really don't support this. The same census info said Atlanta was 43% white (up from 33% in '00) and 50.1% black (down from 61% in '00). The actual number of blacks living in the city declined between 2000 and 2009 by around 8,000 (the number of whites increased by 84,000). While im sure blacks are moving into the city, the amount moving in is probably not high enough to replace the number leaving.

I agree with Akhenaton's hypothesis. A similar percentage was probably seen right after segregation ended, when the neighborhoods were mixed before transitioning to all black as white flight took off.

And people need to stop pushing the "gay mecca" phrase. The last thing this city needs is another nickname that celebrates exclusivity.

Not only is it not crazy - I would even say it's the mainstream if you're in Atlanta. It seems most married people who live in Atlanta book it to the suburbs once they have kids. Atlanta Public Schools and Atlanta Police don't exactly encourage raising a family down there. It's great to live intown, but most of the young people living there were raised in the suburbs. When push comes to shove, they want their kids to have the same experience that they had.

Decatur may be an exception, since it's safe and has good schools.

Sorry but the city already has that phrase
